On The Road (Again) with Ms Toy

"by Sarah Essex You will be hard pressed to pull up a BDSM video and not find a TAZapper. That annoying little device was the brainchild of Ms Toy (Sarah Essex) and for years she took it and a lot of other great items on the road to events under the TOY’s TOYS business name. The TOY’s TOYS roadshow is no more. Things change…."

Vendor of the Month – Dr. Clockwork’s Home for Electrical and Medical Oddities

While it is easy to simply think of vendors as those folks sequestered behind a table in the vendor’s room at a Leather event, vendors often serve other roles in the Leather community such as educators, organizers, and titleholders.  Unfortunately, all too often their many contributions go unnoticed and their many talents unappreciated.

The Vendor of […]

Toronto’s Family Day 2014 Weekend: The Leather Edition Wrap Up

When the Family Day holiday was introduced by the Ontario Liberal government in 2008, it was intended to be a holiday in between the Christmas and Easter holidays, and its emphasis was on “families spending quality time together”.

I bet the Liberals would never have thought that “family” activities would include titleholder contests, workshops on fetish […]

Leather and Glitter, Fashion and Fame at IML 35

Never Let Anyone Dull Your Sparkle

The weekend before IML, I was at the Black Eagle Toronto for Mr. Leatherman Toronto 2013 Robert Miller’s IML send-off party. There, my friend Jenn had a gift delivered to me since she could not make it to the party. When Jenn told me she found this gift, she said […]

Interview with Rupert Huse

If you are looking for last minute kinky holiday gifts, I have a suggestion for you: check out Rupert Huse & Son, Inc

Even if you aren’t, check it out because they not
only have amazingly well crafted BDSM devices, but the web site itself
is beautiful and fun to visit.

I
first encountered Huse toys in person at the vendor fair for KinkFest
in Portland. Despite the very intimidating designs, Rupert and his wife
(who both were working at their booth) were very friendly and easy to
talk to. Not only that, but Rupert has great stories about how he got
into this line of work. I personally find it very impressive that he does all the metal work in his Oregon studio.

Leland: How did you get started in making toys beyond what you use for yourself?

Rupert:
This is a good question with a fairly involved answer. The short story
is I was a general contractor and cabinet maker and realized I was bored
with that business after 15 years. I wanted to do something different
but wasn’t sure what. Around this time I found out I was to become a
father. This forced me to do something as I wanted to be home rather
than going to job sites so I could be with my children. At that point I
dropped the contracting business and started doing this one full time.
