The only thing I can say is RIGHT ON GUY, as always. I am sorry I missed you and Chuck and Houston, but you did raise eyebrows and create conversation of which some of us old hats have been ostracized for, but hey, that's how growth and awareness come.
I do remember being on the front lines in the HIV/AIDS crisis in the early days and coming out as a Marine in the 70's and still serving with honor and pride and openly gay.
I will share this because it is something near and dear to my very soul. The values I carry with me from my first Master, also a Marine and openly gay at the time are Honor, Fidelity, Loyalty, Integrity and Discipline, which have led me to three doctoral levels of study and worldwide achievement in my career fields and these qualities are still a major part of my ilfe.
The kink play is phenomal for me but that is not what it is all about, it's about living with leather and community in the very soul of my being that carries me forward.
Thank You Guy and Everyone Else!
Jere

This was an absolutely spot-fucking-on, not to mention long-overdue, speech. I'm very glad to hear these ideas were presented with such force at LLC. And, not to be too meta about all this, I'm glad the YouTube videos are online for me to share, and widely.

Trevor H. Jacques, Toronto

Guy, what a wonderful, powerful speech (as usual). Thanks for standing up and telling both how it is and how it might be.

Rod, your partner might be interested in CARASResearch.org. I suspect that this is also the kind of organisation that fits into the type for which Guy would like to see us raise money. CARAS has been thinking strategically about kink for many years.

It may not be 'sexy' work, but I do believe that more effort should be put into both psych. issues (such as the new DSM currently proposed, http://DSM5.org, which takes both research and lobbying) and legal issues (such as trying to get the 'Spanner' Law Commission recommendations, http://SexResearch.org/SSSS/Resources.html, see the Law Commission link) implemented in all countries (then we could start on removing from the lawbooks the victimless crimes that arose from legal moralism...). Perhaps, the main problem is that even academic papers about kinky sex just aren't sexy enough for the average member of the kink community, and they are certainly not perceived as leading to more and better sex. At this point, it seems more and more evident to me that the kinky community is also not perceived as leading to more and better sex, especially with it is viewed by youth. Where's that social-marketing department, when we need it?

Rod McCoy (Leatherman of Color 2011)

WOW!!! Nothing like a speech that kicks me in the mental crotch, and makes me look at what I am doing and want to do in the community! Especially the fundraising piece. As a titleholder, I've been encouraged to do some more fundraising, but I have struggled for what organization.

It's also very interesting that Mr. Baldwin mentions research because my partner (also a titleholder) wants to continue his education, and has often spoke about doing research on behalf of our community, and now I can share with him that he may be on the right track.

The other thing I might respond to is the whole question of "problem identification." I'm a relative newbie to the community (active for the past six years), but one thing that I sense is that part of the history and the work of a number of our Leather Elders has been to remove the stigma and sense of shame and "abnormalcy" that used to (and still does!) surround our love of Kink Play. Maybe because we've fought/fight to erase the sense of our sex and play as a "problem," that we become reluctant to address anything within our community that is regarded as "problematic." Something to consider...

Again, all I can say is "WOW!!!" and "Thanks!!!" to Mr. Baldwin.
