The prospects are looking pretty dim for the salvation of the iconic leather bar at 12th and Harrison in San Francisco's SOMA neighborhood.
Hundreds gathered last night to protest the closure, reportedly a lease issue between owners John Gardiner and Joe Banks and the 30-something owner of the property who also owns the Skylark on 16th Street between Valencia and Mission.
The Eagle is set to close the end of April, barring a last minute reprieve.
Here's a good recap of the activity to date in the SF Weekly.

Ron, the Manager of the Eagle, sent me an e-mail last night stating that the Eagle would be OPEN, at least, through the END OF MAY. This has given us another month's lease on life, and all of us at the Eagle are very optimistic.

This will be a sad loss for the Gay Male Leather/BDSM community. It is not just the loss of a bar or "watering hole". It is a loss of a place where we celebrated our community, attended beer busts with great meals, enjoyed title-holder contests, raised funds for worthwhile causes, met friends and socialized with old friends. I remember many happy summer Sunday afternoon beer busts with great friendship, a meal and beer, during my summers in THE CITY in the 1980s-- and meeting friends there when i returned for visits since then.
The SF Eagle is a very important part of our history as Leatherfolk and will be missed.
