Toronto Bound Weekend
 

A time for fun, a time to learn, and a time to give thanks to those who serve Toronto’s leather community and beyond

When the Mr. Leatherman Toronto/Bootblack Toronto competition moved to the new Toronto Leather Pride weekend in August 2011, a void was left on the American Thanksgiving weekend when the competition used to take place. So the Toronto Leather Pride organization, Heart of the Flag Federation Inc (HOTFF), initiated the “Toronto Bound” weekend in its place. As HOTFF president, Master Jack Pearce explained, “The idea was a simple laid back weekend full of fun, education and play.”

The weekend kicked off with the registration party at Toronto's leather bar, the Black Eagle on Black Friday. A silent auction also took place to raise funds for the 2012 charity of choice, the 519 Church Street Community Centre.

During the weekend, participants attended the various tracks of workshops that occurred at the bars, Crews & Tango, the Black Eagle, and Goodhandy’s Pansexual Playground. At Crews & Tango and the Black Eagle, participants learned about the various aspects of bootblacking from current and past Bootblack Toronto titleholders – Tarna (2012), digger (2010), McG (2009), Master Jack (2008), and Ian “black” Turner (2002). At Goodhandy’s, participants observed, learned and wandered between concurrent demos on mummification by Patty, CBT by Eastern Canada Leatherboy 2011 boy iain, sounding by International LeatherSIR 2009 Master Tony Palazzo, percussion play by Master Scott, bondage by Sarah Pie, and  rubber care/creation by Mr. International Rubber 2009 Fenn while sealing volunteers into his new vac/bed. As well, Miss V of Miss V Leather Artisan Cuir was at Goodhandy’s testing and selling items from her plethora of percussive play paraphernalia.

On Thursday November 24th 2011,  the Southern Ontario Leather Association (SOLA) http://leathertraditions.ca raised over $1335.00 for MOVEMBER!

It was a great evening of laughter, skits, and of course judging of the mustaches. A special ‘Thank you’ to Victoria Windsor and Randy Ferrell for volunteering to judge to Mo Bro and Mo Sistas.

The event was held as part of the Cambridge Mingle and Mixer munch at SIZZLE. They had numerous men and women participating, some growing mustaches, other volunteering to raise funds bootblacking, holding events at their workplace, and raising awareness to men’s health.

Across Canada over 35 million dollars was raised this year with over 245,000 participants volunteering in this worthwhile cause!

Next year promises to be even better as more munches and Leather bars are showing interest in participating.

Mr SECC Leather Contest Weekend

ECLSb Update 

Dates and venues are confirmed for the Meat & Greet kick-off party and Victory Brunch for the Eastern Canada LeatherSIR/Leatherboy 2012 contest weekend, which will run Friday, February 17 through Monday, February 20 (a civic long weekend in Ontario). The Presenting Sponsor of ECLSb 2012 is Steamworks, the official bathhouse of ECLSb. 

ECLSb 2012 weekend will begin with the official Meat & Greet at Black Eagle Toronto (10pm. Fri, Feb 17. 457 Church St). Meet and mingle with contestants, judges, out of town guests and local leather folk. 

The weekend’s main event will be the Eastern Canada LeatherSIR/Leatherboy 2012 contest, which will take place Saturday, February 18 at Goodhandy’s (120 Church St, at Richmond).  Please note, the contest will be held at a new earlier time! Doors will open at 12:30pm; the contest will start at 1:30pm sharp! Admission will be $10, with proceeds to ECLSb travel fund. 

Saturday night survivors will be up in time for the butchest brunch in town. Join the new ECLSb titleholders at a special ECLSb Victory Brunch at the Churchmouse & Firkin (11am-2pm. Sun, Feb 19. Upstairs, 475 Church St). The 2012 contest weekend will mark the 4th ECLSb Victory Brunch held at the pub.

10:00 am – Introduction to Bootblacking with Tarna, BBT 2012

The day will begin with a discussion of the origins of bootblacking within the Leather community and without, how to identify wax boots, product options and basic care; followed by a demonstration of a basic brush shine.

11:00 pm – Introduction to Lacing with Master Jack - ICBB2008

Together we will look at the five most common styles of lacing and discuss the benefits of each as well as when, where and how to best use each one. 

12:00 am –The Five Day Spit Shine with black, BBT 2002

There is nothing like a perfectly spit shined boot, and few do this better than black. This is a rare treat to learn the tricks he's spent a lifetime perfecting to obtain a beautiful mirror finish on the boots in your care.

1:00 pm – Lunch Break

1:30 pm to 3:00 pm – Skill Share and Practice Session

A chance to sit down with other bootblacks of varying degrees of experience and skill, to practice what you've learned so far and build on your current skill base. 

Mr Leather Ottawa 2012 Wrap Up

Forgive me Toronto for I have strayed from the city I was born and raised and do the core of my work covering events for Leatherati.com. But once in a while, it's nice to get away and check out something different. And for the weekend of November 11-13, 2011, I spread my Leatherati wings as I returned to the nation’s capital two months after covering the Central Canada Olympus Leather competition to cover the Mr. Leather Ottawa (MLO) 2012 competition weekend entitled "Technokink - There's An App For That!".

PART I – The Final Supper

On Friday, November 11th, the MLO 2012 weekend kicked off with a dinner at St. Brigid's Centre of the Arts, a deconsecrated Catholic Church where everything related to MLO happened that weekend. 

At the dinner, the Roast of MLO 2011 Robert Macmillan and the Meet the Meat portion of the contest occurred. The Roast was more of a toast of Robert Macmillan being very true to himself from competition to the end of his title year.

Before Meet the Meat began, Dean Ross (MLO 1999) introduced the judging panel to determine who will be the next Mr. Leather Ottawa. Mike Tattersall (MLO 2010) served as Head Judge. The rest of the judges included Angela Albert (Ms. International Olympus Leather 2007), "Mama" Sandy Reinhardt, Paul Ciantar (Canadian Leather Man 2004), and Sir Ryan Auld. The tally master was Dan McNamara and the judge's boy was Boy Jake. The contestants were wrangled under Den Daddy Richard Hubley (MLO 2008) and Den Tranny Zelda Marshall (Grand Marshall of the Capital Pride Pride 2011). 

Then, Dean introduced each of the contestants, and asked each contestant some questions based on the biographies that they submitted. The judges didn’t waste any time as they scored the contestants in this portion, which counted for 10% of their total score.

ECLSb - Judging Panel Announced

The organizers of the Eastern Canada LeatherSIR/Leatherboy 2012 contest weekend are pleased to announce the panel of judges for the ECLSb 2012 contest. The contest weekend will take place in Toronto from Friday, February 17, 2012 through the provincial holiday Monday on February 20, 2012.

Serving on the panel of judges will be:

• International LeatherSIR 2011 Alan Penrod, from Atlanta (GA), who will serve as head judge
• International Leatherboy 2011 pup Nitro, from Atlanta (GA)
• International Community Bootblack 2011 Luna, from Oakland (CA)
• Eastern Canada LeatherSIR 2011 Master Chuck, from Sudbury (ON)
• Eastern Canada Leatherboy 2011 boy iain, from Toronto (ON)

Tally Master will be boy Alex Dunlop, from Toronto (ON). Judge's boy will be Pup Kalen, from Toronto (ON). Den Daddy will be Dan Madden, from Toronto (ON). Stage Manager for the contest will be Fenn, Mr International Rubber 2010, from Toronto (ON). Box Office Manager will be Gloria McIsaac, from Toronto (ON).

The ECLSb 2012 contest will be held at 12:30pm on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Goodhandy's at 120 Richmond St in Toronto. Returning as emcee for the contest is Tom Stice, International slave 1995 and Southeast Mr Drummer 1998, of Chicago (IL). The 2012 contest theme will be "Retro".

Northbound Leather's Rapture Recap

Leatherati North Correspondent (and resident fashionista), J.J. Deogracias took this year’s Northbound Leather fashion show by storm as he covered this theatrical, fashionable event for Leatherati.com in perhaps his most theatrical, fashionable outfit to date.

As Toronto’s LG Fashion Week wrapped up, the Rapture had just begun... 

And I’m not talking about the rapture that has been predicted and re-predicted by Harold Camping (who incidentally re-predicted it for October 21, 2011). The Rapture I'm referring to is the name and theme of the 15^th edition of the Northbound Leather fashion show (which happened on October 22, 2011, the day after the re-predicted rapture). Taking place at the Sound Academy, Rapture was produced by Carolyn Kelly (who produced last year’s Northbound Leather fashion show, Vanilla? ) and showcased the collection of Northbound Leather's lead designer, Marty Rotman, which was an eclectic mix of black and brown leathers in a variety styles ranging from steampunk to athletic gear.

As the fashion show opened up with a lyrical remix of Blondie's “Rapture”, the Mother of Debauchery sat on a swing floating above the runway while her children danced and performed aerial acrobatics on and above the runway.
