A Fashionista’s View of IML 34

What Did JJ Deogracias (and Others) Wear During IML 34? by JJ Deogracias, Leatherati North Correspondent
When I competed in Mr. Leatherman Toronto two years ago, I was brand spanking new in the leather community, but I gave the whole community hell for judging me just because I didn't fit the mould of a typical leatherman; hence, the ending line of my speech at the time, "I'm here. I'm very, very queer. And I'm not going anywhere." After the dust settled from coming in first runner-up, I made my way around the various leather and kink events in Toronto, acquainted with and learned from the people within the leather community, and stepped up the outrageousness with each outfit I wore at leather events – adding a touch of colour (especially pink) here, a pinch of sparkle and glitter there, a flutter of a fan, and so on.
As time went on, the expressions of disgust dissipated, my support grew, and my fashion expression was encouraged. When I went to my first IML in 2010, I bought a leather boa from Marvellous Mayhem on the day of the contest. One of my allies, fellow Canadian Shawn Carroll encouraged me to wear the boa like a skirt and paired it with his corset that he loaned me for the contest. When I emerged at the contest in what I now refer to as my “Shredded Leather Skirt” look, people didn't shun me (at least publicly) for what I wore and all those who knew me chuckled at my boldness and told me that I was a “breath of fresh air”. When I went to IML last month, I felt I needed to step-up my game. I agonized on what to wear to each event, and packed corsets, tutus, headpieces, accessories, masks, and fans along with my leather (surprisingly without going over the baggage weight limit). During that weekend, I visited the IML Leather Market, where I tried on, borrowed, and bought interesting items to add to my Mr. Dressup leather Tickle Trunk. Thank you to the vendors at the Leather Market especially Marvelous Mayhem, Semmerling and Schaefer Mask Studio, Squeak Latex, and The Blonde Swan for letting me run wild through your booths and fueling my outrageousness. While covering IML in my "legendary" outfits as some of Leatherati colleagues called them, I definitely turned heads and made heads shake, intrigued or scared passersby, and received a lot of complements and a lot of smiles.

Interview with Hardy Haberman

There are a few household names in our community, and Hardy Haberman certainly qualifies as one.  To say that he knows where the bodies are buried is a gross understatement!
I had a chance to sit down for an interview with Hardy at the recent Beyond Leather Weekend.  Our conversation ran the gamut from education to authenticity.
Enjoy my conversation with Hardy after the jump
